Our Contributions calculator is designed to help you work out how to make the most of your super contributions.

By entering how much you are willing to give up from your take-home pay, we’ll estimate the most effective way for you to make your super contributions, before and/or after tax.

Which GESB account do you have?

GESB Super You probably have a GESB Super account if you joined GESB on or after 16 April 2007.
West State Super You probably have a West State Super account if you joined GESB before 16 April 2007 and after 28 September 1993.

If you also hold a Gold State Super account, contributions your employer makes to Gold State Super, known as 'notional employer contributions' count towards your concessional contributions cap when you also make concessional contributions to a taxed account, such as GESB Super.

The results produced by this calculator are inappropriate for holders of defined benefit accounts such as Gold State Super. Contribution caps for GESB Super or West State Super, do not include contributions already made to your Gold State Super account. Therefore, you should not rely solely on these results.
We recommend you revisit this calculator on a regular basis as your circumstances, tax and other rules can change over time.
The calculations included in this tool are based on existing legislation and do not take into account any proposed legislative changes.
You currently work for the Western Australian state government.
For the purpose of this calculator, 'income' is your annual, monthly or fortnightly income from employment before tax, including any bonus payments and standard member contributions that are salary sacrificed. It excludes any employer super contributions and other packaged benefits. Any income you may have received from other sources has not been taken into account.
The calculator makes a number of assumptions. We recommend you read them carefully. If your actual situation differs from the assumptions made, then the results presented may differ from your actual situation.

Untaxed funds, such as West State Super, have unique features

Concessional contributions made to an untaxed scheme (like West State Super or Gold State Super), also count towards an individual's concessional contributions cap to a taxed scheme, but are not capped within those schemes. That is, the annual cap of a taxed scheme does not limit the amount you can make to an untaxed fund. However, as such contributions to an untaxed scheme count towards your annual tax scheme cap, they do limit your ability to make further concessional contributions to taxed super funds.
In an untaxed fund, such as West State Super, before-tax contributions and earnings may be taxed at 15% when the benefit is paid to the member or transferred to a taxed fund.

There are rules that apply to contributions

We assume that your employer contributes Superannuation Guarantee (SG) at 11.5% of the gross income amount entered only. No allowance has been made for the maximum superannuation contribution base ($65,070 per quarter for the 2024/25 financial year).You can adjust the SG amount in the assumptions section if your employer contributes a different amount.
The contributions are made within the same financial year.
No allowance has been made for spouse contributions.

Rules for before tax (salary sacrifice) contributions differ for GESB Super and West State Super

Concessional (before-tax) contributions (including employer SG, salary sacrifice and tax-deductible personal contributions) to a taxed fund, such as GESB Super, are capped at a maximum of $30,000 per year (2024/25 financial year).
If you've selected GESB Super, we adjust these contributions so you don't exceed the concessional contributions cap (which applies to the total of your employer and before tax contributions).
Members of untaxed schemes such as West State Super, are subject to a lifetime untaxed plan cap of $1.78 million per super fund for the 2024/25 financial year.
No allowance has been made for the bring-forward rule for people under 75 years old. For more details, see How much can you contribute.

Rules for after tax contributions are the same for GESB Super and West State Super

Non-concessional (after-tax) contributions are capped at $120,000 per year, a maximum of four times the maximum standard concessional contributions limit (currently $30,000). This is notwithstanding the 'bring-forward rule'.
Non-concessional contributions can only be made within the cap if your total super balance is less than $1.9 million on 30 June of the previous financial year. No allowance has been made for this cap.
We adjust these contributions so you don't exceed the annual non-concessional contributions cap.

The Commonwealth Government Co-contribution and Low Income Superannuation Tax Offset are included

The Commonwealth Government Super Co-contribution and low-income superannuation tax offset (LISTO) have been included in the calculation. Your eligibility for these payments is based on the information you entered into the calculator including your annual income, employer contributions, after-tax contributions and salary sacrifice contributions. Other eligibility criteria apply.
As contributions to your West State Super account don't get taxed, any before-tax contributions made into your account are not eligible for the LISTO contribution.
The Super Co-contribution rate is current from 1 July 2024.
We assume that you qualify for the Super Co-contribution if you meet the income threshold and you make after tax contributions.
It is assumed that the Super Co-contribution for any after-tax contributions made during the relevant year is paid at the end of that year.

Tax may apply to your super contributions

Where applicable an estimate of the Division 293 additional contribution tax for those on incomes over the relevant threshold has been included.
We assume that contributions made to super are limited to your applicable concessional and non-concessional contribution caps. No allowance has been made for contributions made over these contributions caps, or for any additional tax that may be payable on excess contributions as a result. No allowance has been made for any other tax on super.
We assume contributions made to West State Super are not subject to contributions tax. These contributions may be subject to tax upon accessing this money. No allowance for this tax has been taken into account in this calculator.

The calculator applies tax on your current income as per personal income tax rates

The calculator works out the income tax payable on the current income you have entered by applying the current financial year's personal income tax rates (including the Low Income Tax Offset) and the Medicare Levy where it applies based on the individual thresholds. The actual Medicare Levy may be different than calculated for members of couples. Any other form of income you receive has not been taken into account. No allowance has been made for the Medicare Levy Surcharge.
You are assumed to be an Australian resident for tax purposes.
No allowance has been made for taxes (including tax that applies to the payment of super and retirement income benefits) with the exception of personal income tax and contributions tax. If any of these other taxes apply, the calculator's results will be incorrect.

We provide you examples of what other members contribute

The calculator shows the lowest, median and highest regular contributions of GESB members like you, based on your salary and whether you have a West State Super or GESB Super account. It does not include lump sum contributions. The lowest contribution is the lowest amount contributed by members like you in the last financial year. The median contribution is the middle value that is contributed by members like you. The highest contribution is the highest amount contributed by members like you in the last financial year.

We use statistical, aggregated data relating to our calculator users for analytical purposes. Aggregated data includes anonymous data derived from the calculator information and does not identify any individual. Subject to applicable laws and regulations, we use this information to understand our customers and to develop and improve our services.
